The American league champion, Detroit Tigers acquired Gary Sheffield from the Yankees in exchange for 3 pitching prospects, most notably right handed pitcher Humberto Sanchez. This is a high risk/high reward trade for the Tigers. In Sheffield, they get the slugger they need. In addition, they get a guy who walks more then he strikesout; something this team desperately needed. However, Sheffield will turn 38 this month and is coming off a major wrist injury.
Was this a risk worth taking? I say yes....The Tigers are deep in pitching prospects and a healthy Sheffield plus a few other tweaks with the roster will give the Tigers a great opportunity to finish what they started in 2006.
